Welcome!
Eighth grade Latin builds on the foundations established in seventh grade. Following a unit of review, students study Latin grammar and vocabulary in greater detail with the goal of reading more complex passages in Latin, as well as translating Latin sentences into English. Study takes into account increased child development and therefore is more comprehensive and intensive than in seventh grade. The course largely follows the curriculum outlined in the textbook, Ecce Romani, the same series begun in sixth grade and continued throughout last year. Additionally, students will be translating passages gleaned from the Latin Lingua series in an attempt to increase translating experience and skills. Enrichment will take various forms, from reading mythological accounts of the Greek and Roman gods to traditional ancient Roman stories that explain origins and metamorphosis to songs, psalms and prayers. Selected topics in Roman history and culture will also be covered throughout the year.

In March all eighth grade students will participate in the National Latin Exam, co-sponsored by the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League.
This promises to be an exciting year in Latin, as students realize the deep traditions passed to them through this extraordinary language.
